Brigadier General Robert “Tip” Osterthaler is an American communications specialist. Tip has operated and overseen numerous satellite communications and technical support organizations.
Tip served in the United States Air Force for over 28 years and retired at the rank of Brigadier General. He held multiple command and leadership assignments during his Air Force career, including tours as Vice Commander of the Air Intelligence Agency and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy.
Following his time in uniformed service, Tip was the Senior Vice President of Science Applications International Corporation. This $280 million business unit provided technical support to US Government agencies, including military services, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Defense Security Cooperation Agency, and several foreign governments.
Tip acted for eight years as the President and CEO of SES Government Solutions, a cleared publicly traded $300 million satellite communications company.
Tip has been an independent consultant for the last seven years to global communication satellite owner SES SA, specializing in US Government and international business. In addition, he has advised numerous organizations, including Hawkeye 360, ICEYE, and Madison Dearborn Partners. Tip also sat, for four years, on the Board of Directors for FirstNet, an independent authority under the US Department of Commerce, where he was also Board Chair from 2020 to 2021.
Tip is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, where he earned his degree in Economics.
He then got a Master of Business Administration from Texas A&M University.
